Yo Nilbog:

You said that MF had data discs that were SONY on sale for 9.99. Well, the price is correct.

However, I got my discs yesterday and they were NOT SONY; they were TKD.

So, if you got Sony, I got scrod. [PluPerfect of SCREWED]

Maybe the TKD discs will work fine; if not, I'll send them back. But, DID YOU GET SONY? oR, DID YOU GET tkd?

What are you drinking back at the Goblin's cave?

Talking TDK

Hey Mr. Hornet,
I also got TDK at MF, I also checked the part # before i orderd and they were the same as the sony disc i got from them last time. I compared them with my sony disc and everything looks the same. I could be wrong but i think there both made by the same factory.

I'm getting my disks tomarrow, and if they send me TDK I'm sending them back. If they advertise SONY on their website, then I better damn well get sony discs. I've heard horror stories about every brand of disc except sony. Musicians friend better give me what they advertised or I'll punch them in the head.

Yo great Nil of Bog:

I just talked to the folks at MF -- they work on Sundays with REAL PEOPLE TO TALK TO.

The techie was very nice and is going to exchange my TKD's.

He said he couldn't understand why they sent TKD's because they have plenty of Sony in stock.

So, the price is the same as the ad -- no problema with MF.

I've bought from them before and have always received what was advertised. Maybe a computer glitch at the hub.

If you get TKD's, just call and they will fix it up -- free 800 number too.

Sony vs. TDK

I've used TDK MD data disks for 2 years now. Haven't had any problems, knock on wood. From the comments, it appears many of you feel Sony makes better quality disks than TDK. Can anyone comment on why Sony is better? Do they have a proven record of greater reliability or something?

DHN, the fact that you have used TDK for two years with no problem, I think, tells you all you need to know. I have not used TDK before now, but i'm going to give them a try.I think the thing about sony, at least for me, is that I have never heard anything bad about them. And also Sony i believe, invented mini disc and atrac compression. I don't think there could be any difference in sound, only disc error, it works or it doesn't. My sony and TDK look as if they were poured in the same mold, could be that both are made by the same plant.

yeah, I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about sony discs. but I've heard of TDK's getting stuck in the drive, or going bad with a bunch of data on them. So I'd rather just play it safe. It's like using trojans. They're the trusted brand.

Sony did invent the mini-disc, as well as cd's and the s/pdif format (with phillips), beta, etc. I buy sony products almost exclusively for this reason.

ditto, except for sony players/recorders
I hate that stupid end search thing, plus I think it helps minidisc grow if you buy "third party" like sharp or panasonic.

Okay. Thanks for the comments.

Incidentally, I received the 10 MD data disks that I ordered from MF for $9.99, just today. As many of you have commented, they shipped TDK disks instead of Sony. Since I've only used TDK disks over the past 2 years and since they I haven't had any trouble with them (knock on wood again), I'm going to keep them.

By the way, I feel no affinity to TDK. They just happen to be the brand that my local Guitar Center has stocked. As Stan Williams has implied, since they seem to working reliably for me, I shouldn't worry about using them. I was just curious why some of you were anxious to return the TDK's for Sony branded disks.

As for Sony, I agree they have developed a lot of great concepts and inventions. Oddly, I have had the most trouble with Sony branded electronics over the years, including stereo equipment, televisions and the MDM-4X 4 track mini disk recorder. I have never questioned Sony's innovations but due to my bad luck with their products, I've always questioned their quality.

Anyway, that's my own experience and opinion. Thanks again for the information.
