Ok, so I WAS thinking of getting an ADAT and a mixer, but I just don't have enough money for that. So, I'm thinking that the MD8 would be a good solution, I realize there is quality loss due to compression, but I think I'll live through it. Are there any other digital multitracks out there under $2000 that run on removable media, like minidiscs? thanks for the help.

Question

does it have to use removable media? If so, why?

That was my big thing when looking into a multitrack - removable media. You can get an adat and a mixer for under $2000, though. The LX20 was on sale at guitar center for -$1000, and you could get a decent mixer for a few hundred.

But if you want the "be-all-box" - I think the MD8 is prolly one of the best choices in it's price range. And I wouldnt worry about the compression.

I want removable media because it's cheaper than buying another hard drive for a HD based multi-track, and i also like the idea of having all of my stuff on a disk that won't be damaged if it gets bumped hard during transit or somthing.

I live in canada, and for me to get a mixer with 8 mic pre's, inserts, and direct outs, its about $900, and the ADAT is about $1600.

I hope to eventually get an ADAT setup with the ADAT EDIT soundcard/software, but working a part time job and going to school part time doesn't leave a whole lot of money.

Thank you for the help!

I think that you should seriously take a look at this package deal. You can backup everything with the CDRW and treat them just like removable media. It has 12 tracks and effects.

send me the money, and then I'll smuggle it across the border for you.
I except only cash. Small, unmarked bills.
Leave it in a brown paper bag by the big oak tree in central park.
If anyone catches you, this never happened.

okay, okay

seriously, though. You'd be well off with the MD8.

You could always get one of those AKAI multitracks, or the YAMAHA 16 track that came out recently. I'm pretty sure they have connections to allow you to hook up some kind of external media.

torn between two choices...

I'm still tryin to decide between the ADAT and the MD8, it doesn't help that im poor from working part time and going to school... but what are ya gonna do? if i get an 'all in one' it will probly be the MD8.
