In the studio, condenser mics are often used with really expensive preamps. It pays to think of this as all part of the same chain, ie.
artist->mic->preamp->recorder For live use, vocal mics used might include Shure SM58, Shure Beta 58, Neumann TLM103, Beyer M88. |

FWIW - Although he's not an "alternative band", I noticed that Prince appeared to be using a Shure Beta 58 on 'Saturday Night Live' last night.

I think STP, Live, etc. all use those Sampson condenser mics. That and/or the Behringer B-1. Velvet Revolver apparently love that one.

Scott Weiland from STP quote:
"We used the SM57 for guitar, drums, bass, everything...." Hmmm.... Although an interview with an engineer that recorded a STP album mentioned "throwing up a Neumann U47"...

“Scott's studio has a good selection of gear,” says Williams. “For his vocals, we had a Neumann U47 tube mic and a Teletronix LA-2A compressor. He has a Soundcraft board and Pro Tools."
An interview with the band... http://mixonline.com/mag/audio_velve...ver/index.html Alot of info there... Im a freaky VR fan... ![]()

...Mix magazine's article on (more Hard-Rock than Alternative) Nickelback's sessions:
Vocals were recorded in the upstairs vocal booth with a simple setup of a RØDE NTK tube mic running through a Neve 1084 preamp, UREI 1176 compressor and Avalon 737 SP mic processor. “If I'm screaming, we need to be able to have a diaphragm that's going to be able to handle the screaming and is not going to gut out some of the stuff,” explains frontman Chad Kroeger. “He's got one of the loudest voices,” declares co-producer Joey Moi [a notion that Peake quickly seconds]. “He's like a weapon. He can destroy microphones quickly. We used the same one the whole time. He would turn it away on certain syllables, like ‘p’s and ‘f’s.” Kroeger evidently became very adept at his special technique. ...the complete article here: http://mixonline.com/recording/inter...io_nickelback/

Speaking of nickleback, I got another singer that has a really loud voice and Rodes pretty good for his voice.
Found this on mix online too, though I think his vocals could be better.... "The [Soundelux] 251 was also used as a room mic on Mellotron, piano and all of Grohl's vocals." Last edited by JoeBannon; 02-06-2006 at 04:51.. |

Troy Van Leeuwen of QOTSA likes this SE mic for a lot of things... the SE220 or something I believe...

Wow. The music industry must not be paying what it used to when you've got these big name artists using K-mart Blue Light Special vocal microphones.
How long before we see Clapton playing a Squire Strat? . |

...Prince recorded most of his "Purple Rain" tracks using a Hohner guitar (Fender Tele-copy) which sold originally for about $200 (about the same as a Squier Tele)...this is also the guitar that Prince uses in the "Uptown", "Controversy" and "1999 videos, among others. He continues to use this guitar on his most recent (top-grossing) tours... http://www.rockfunk.de/teleprinz.htm ...I purchased the identical model Hohner on Ebay a while back for $50...presently replacing/restoring the electronics...
