Critique Please

Hello all,

This is my second attempt at "properly" miking my kit. I'm including a raw track of my results. I'm using a sm57 on the snare, d6 on the kick, and mk-012s overhead (using the 'one over the snare and one to the right shoulder' method). Let me know what you think of it and what I should change.

Thanks

p.s. Sorry my track doesn't include more actual playing to help get a better idea. Besides being exhausted, my hands and feet were acting up today. It's really annoying, I've been waiting for surgery for about six years. Great Canadian Health Care. Oh well...

I'd say it sounds pretty good. A bit more meat on the bass drum, and some drumhead tuning issues...other than that, i think it sound really good. Very good as a matter of fact. Those toms came out really clear on the recording, and you werent micing them separately, only using overheads, sounds really nice. The snare sounds great too. Thats a terrific untreated track I think. Wow, if you can get that sound with overheads, i might have to rethink what my mic setup will be.

Hey that kit sounds totally vintage. What's your setup? I know it can't be modern fusion sizes because the toms sound mighty large....so do the cymbals.

Not bad at all! I wish I could get that kind of sound dry out of the gates...I need to upgrade mics.

If this kit were mic'd for metal, I'd write a whole paragraphs about what to change, but I bet you captured the sound just the way YOU wanted to hear it for what you like to play. It sounds great.

I'm by no stands really qualified to say what you should be changing in this recording, but anyway, personally I think the kick sounds a "chubby", maybe a little too resonant or something, I dunno, it's just lacking in my eyes, other than that it's pretty cool, better than I could do anyway

Yes, I'm with ya on the kick. I just hate tuning kicks. I think I just hate tuning in general. So a more defined 'fat' punch is what I guess I should be going for. Thanks for your input.
