Condenser mic for sax/vocals thats better than or equal to an re20?

Well, I've spent some time doing a little recording between my Re20 and
V67G. I am finding that I like the sound I get from my V67G, maybe the
condenser characteristics? The only thing is it is bright/grainy, the
Re20 is not. Possibly the DMP3 preamp is not suited to well for the RE20?
I do notice the v67 is very hot and when recording my sax I have to stand
about 2 feet away, but I get too much of the background and key noise, but
the sound of the sax is more accurate. The re20 has a thicker sound
espcially with VOX, but the v67 sounds livelier, poppier? The most
important thing for me is my sax recording, a little spoken word vox (I
have a deep voice), and occasional singing male vocals. At a later date
I'll pick up an SM7 for female vocals. Is there a better condenser mic
that I can use or should I spend the time in eq/tweaking or maybe another
preamp? I would more than likely sell the v67 or re20 to fund the purchase
for a newer mic depending what it is.

Would maybe a ribbon mic do an even better job?

..what you describe as "what you're looking for" is EXACTLY what is being said about Bob Heil's new PR-40 dynamic microphone...combining the best features of a classic dynamic mic with the benefits of a good condenser cardioid microphone...it's getting rave reviews all over the net...I plan to add one to my mic cabinet (once I get the go from Harvey Gerst who promised to post his experiences testing the new Heil mics on this site shortly)...

If I had the budget, I'd be adding an AKG C414 and/or a really good ribbon (possibly a Royer or an AEA?). Plus, as you noted, a really good preamp would be a must so you're looking at $4-6k.) But that's out of my league so far.

I'm making do with a combination of a MD-421 dynamic and an M-Audio Solaris condenser (not bad for $250).

Yamaha 82z tenor, Selmer Mk6 alto and Yamaha Wx-5 windsyth here j... what're you playin??

I'm playing on a Keilwerth SX90R "Shadow" tenor, P. Mauriat 67R alto, and Antigua 586BC soprano.
What preamp are you using with your setup? Do you have any recordings you could share?
I really wish I could get one of those synth's, but that's another $800-1000 extra, I don't have. Must be fun though.

...you'd be (pleasantly) surprised what a Groove Tubes Brick (under $300 used) and one of the Chinese ribbon clones (under $90 at the link below) will do on a sax (for less than$400)...been there, done that...
