Quote taken from MPC Sounds.com
"Quik Tipz: How the Heavy-Weights make Hitz So...you produced a mad beat. The artist and record company love it. They buy it. They take it into the studio to record vocals to it. Now they're ready to mix. But...is the beat truly as hot as it could be?!? Heavy weight producers would say no! Here's why... Too often in Hip Hop, producers make killer beats only to have artists record vocals over them that simply don't agree with the arrangement of the original beat. The problem is the lyrical ideas of the artist and the production ideas of the producer don't match on first try. So..when a producer sells a beat that isn't then re-arranged to better fit the lyrical performance that is recorded over it, the overall song will lose it's power due to the vocals & beat clashing. The lesson to be learned is 90% of the time production should not end when the beat is sold. Heavy weight producers take pride & joy in re-arranging their productions to fit around vocal performances by opening up spaces for certain lyrical lines while adding in new fills & riffs in between other vocal lines. In short, professional producers sculpt their beats around vocal performances! In fact, with the perfect combination of catchy hook vocals answered by catchy hook fills & riffs, hits can truly be born! Nothing makes a better formula for a hit than catchy "question and answer" phrasing. The problem with alot of amateur hip hop productions is that the artist's vocals (the questions) simply run over the producer's riffs (the answers). Real producers re-pave the road and come out with hits!" Learn from this my people, It ain't over till you say its over! Music deserves to be taken to the next level as well as the rest of us. |

Yeah that's why I tend o make custom tracks vs just making a whole CD full of them. I do make tracks that I put on a CD to show off what I can do but I usually make a beat for a client from scratch.

I thought about an MPC but decided against it. Reason is my love child! LOL Anyway, depending on client requests, I can go into Reason and tweak the beat to fit around their vocals (i.e. inserting breaks and cutting the beat off totally, rearranging drums, etc.). But I only do that on request after the beat is sold. Most cats don't want to do shit with the beat except record their vocals over it.
I can do custom tracks but if I have the beat in my head already, I'm makin' that shit...might use it for my own shit, might sell it. |

I hope everybody is doing it like that. Don't even call yourself a producer if you're not. Even though the track has been passed on to an artist, it's still a representation of you, and why would you not rep yourself to the fullest everytime. You never know who is gonna hear what.

I would have thought that if you were doing this commercially you should provide a couple of files.
Example... file1 full loop file2 full loop with extra hi hats file3 full loop with snare variations file4 half loop file5 half loop with extra hi hats file6 half loop with snare variations file7 Quarter with fill on snare file8 Quarter with fill on hats and so on???? This way they could rearrange the loop as they want surely? |

Yeah that does happen, as long as it's hot, whoever works on it is cool, but if they bring the song back to me, and my part(meaning the track) ain't hot, please believe there's gonna be some changes.
