488 Mk. 1 Question.

Hello to all you fellow Tascam fans. I have a question about my "new" 488.(Mk. 1).
How hard is it to take the case apart? I need to fix the headphone jack. It
shorts out on one side. An easy fix, but how difficult to gain access? If anyone here has taken one of these apart, I would appreciate some advice.
Thanks in advance.Steve Z.

Arrow I can't say I've ever disassembled a 488(std), but...

in general, you should start on the bottom and remove screws until what you want to come off comes off! Take a minute to also scope the inside of the cassette compartment, 'cause on some Porta's (414mkII) there's a single screw that needs to be removed from the cassette compartment.

Once enough screws are removed, separate the halves slowly, while peering inside, as there will be several attaching cables from the top half to the bottom half of the unit.

There are some screws on the bottom which don't need, or shouldn't be removed, as they hold the power transformer to the base. These will be located near & around a metal plate. It's kinda hard to describe, but if you remove these, it's no big deal to get them back on. Look for any telltale sign, such as a raised "dot" near the screws, and that would denote "remove me".

Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but I hope that helps!!

Thank you, Reel. I will procede with caution!!! Shouldn't be too big a deal.

Arrow I seem to remember a little "arrow" by the screws that need to be removed.

Of course, I take different gear apart all the time, so I could be mistaken. It's no big deal, and I'm sure you can handle it!
