what are sample rates for?

just started using audition for recording, need to know what sample rates are for?

That all depends. If you're doing a home recording and the final product is going to be a CD, your best bet would be 44.1 kHz sample rate at a bit depth of 24 (assuming your sound card can do 24-bit). If you're doing audio for a DVD, you want the sample rate to be 48 kHz.

how do i get these settings in audition?

Your manual should say... If you don't have one... Try F1...

When you open Audition, go to File/New Session and a box will come up that allows you to set the sampling rate and bit depth.

Honestly, 44.1k and 16-bit is the simplest and most accessible way to record your vocals (mainly because those are the same specs as a compact disc). However, if the quality is unsatisfying, then up the bit and sample rates (but after your production you can always "export" to 44.1k / 16-bit to burn your CDs. Experiment if you have the time...
