Evans E-MAD head. Before thos came out, just tune it low and put a (one) pillow in it.

Evans also makes these little pillow looking things that lean up against the heads. When you hit the drum, they bounce a little. That lets the head resonate for a second before it stops. So you get the low end of not having it muffled while still having some control.

I go back and fourth between Evans Emad (batter and reso) or just a well placed pillow.

I have an EQ3 with a retro screen reso (Evans)... when you have those two, you don't need any more muffling.

I only dampen when I record.
It's hollow live. It sounds good and is louder. Remo PSIII baby

I have a small pillow in it that barely touches both head. Its a really flat pillow also, but mostly, its all about tuning. Remember, the bass drum is a DRUM as well. You have to learn to tune it properly so you can get a killer sound out of it without muffling the hell out of it.

We've been using Aquarian Superkick Is and IIs lately -- with no additional muffling. They work very well for recording.

Wide open...EMAD without foam inlay, just slight dampening from the plastic ring. Fiberskyn on the reso; no hole. Beta52 about three inches from beater impact and about 20 degrees off axis. Both heads fairly loose.

I use a small bass drum muffling pillow. It's made by Protection Racket. It works really well.
It's a bit like the Evans one mentioned. It bounces off the head when you hit it, and falls back onto the head shortly after to dampen the sound. |

My drummer - Evans EMAD with the foam strip, Evans EQ3 reso head. Still a little live for recording, though.
Me - in my 20" kick - generic heads, very loose, one pillow (it says "soft" so you know that it is). Lots of punch. In my 22" kick - Evans EQ2 batter with kickpad, EQ3 reso. Again, this is a little live for recording. If I'm going to close mic a kick, I'll use my 20.

I like the Evans pillow thing that velcroes to the inside of the drum.. it stays put and is easy to adjust....doesnt shift like pillows tend to do.
