Misc Audio Manipulation Questions

Hey everyone,

I have a few questions, so I think I should just get into it. These questions all pertain to band recordings; seperate tracks and everything together.

1. Is there a way to improve the sound of vocals and guitar that have been recorded seperately? Maybe make them sound richer in the final mix?

2. I have a mono recording of a drum track. Is there a way to increase the sound of the snare and kick and NOT the cymbals?

3. I also have a mono recording of a band performing live, but the vocals and bass are a little low. Is there a way to bring them up from a mono recording?

4. I'm using Cool Edit Pro 2.1. Do you guys think I should upgrade to Adobe Audition, or is there really not much difference?

To question 2 I would suggest either a graphic or parametric equaliser to boost the lower frequencies for the kick, and the mid for the snare

To question 1 I would compress the vocal then use an aural exciter to add sparkle.

My opinion.

1. Yes. There are many ways to accomplish this. Be more specific as to what you need.

2. I'd use a multiband compressor to increase gain in the lower and mid frequencies for kick and snare, while compressing the higher frequency where the cymbals reside. You could attempt this as suggested earlier with EQ, but I don't think it will yeild the results you are looking for.

3. Sweep the frequencies for the vocal and bass, and give them a slight nudge. Unfortuenately, you'll be nudging any additional instrumentation in that frequency space as well. So be careful.

4. I can't speak for you, especially not knowing what your main use for the software is. For me, it was worth the upgrade.
