Newbie post..mixdown equalization & levels

This is my first post here and I just wanted to say hello to all.

I have a question concerning final mixdown equalization & levels. I'm using a set of roland MA-8 monitors and I am having trouble trying to establish the correct EQ curve for playback on a standard stereo. When mixing I try to be careful not to over accent the bass but still achive a good sounding mix....well it sounds great on the computer but when I make a CD and play it in the stereo it sounds like the bass is on steroids. Not anywhere near RIAA standards. I'm also having trouble getting enough voulme on the CD. I have to turn up the stereo's volume control up quite a bit more than factory CD's.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This has been covered over and over, and all the replies say the same thing:

USE YOUR EARS.

There are no "presets." What you have to do depends on the sound of your room, how the monitors interact with the space, what sound you are trying for, and several thousand other things. There may be a few people here with experience with the particular monitors you use (for example), but not in your acoustic space.

Experiment, and make a note of what works, and what doesn't. There's a lot of information available at this site, but not much on magic bullets. Every room is different, the gear in each one is different, the recordings are of different music played by musicians of widely differing taste and ability, and the musical goals are different. And you're different from each of us. Did I mention, every song is different?

I was reading a thread at a pro engineer forum site the other day, and the question of "presets" came up. It turned out that the only one anyone used was a highpass filter set at 150Hz to kill the tubbiness from the room.

So try things and listen. Believe me, this is the fastest way to improve. Burn your mixes to CD and carry them around. Play them in your car, in your boombox, your Walkman.
