Connecting the RNC

How would I connect the RNC to my rig. I hook up my guitar to v amp2 the outs on the vamp to the line ins on my firebox. Where does the RNC go?

I've not used the rnc for an effect on guitar but if it is like any other compressor for guitar you go thru the compressor first, then on to the rest of your chain

guitar is intstrument level; RNC and firebox are line level; the vamp converts instrument level to line level I assume; so the RNC would go in between.

Put from V-amp=1/4" to in on Compressor. Out on compressor to in on recording device. Should all just be 1/4 inch jacks, for a guitar.

I hear about Y cables a lot when connecting external effects.

You need a Y cable to connect an effect to the Insert patch point on a channel strip. That's not what you're doing, so don't worry about getting one.

on tweaks guide it says this? If this is the case I need another preamp! ahh. An important tip for those going mixerless: Before you buy an audio interface with built-in preamps consider if you will ever want to add a compressor. If you think you will, make sure the audio interface has inserts or sends. If it does not, there will be no way to add a compressor to the rig without buying yet another preamp.

I have the firebox. Which doesn't have inserts. Just line ins.

If you like your Firebox, you could always pick up a Firepod for not much more. An extra 6 mic pre's, and it has line inserts on the first 2 pre's for compressors, EQ's, etc.

well the problem with that is I don't want to spend another 6 hundred dollars on something I don't need except for the inserts. I guess i'll have to get a pre amp or something. Or maybe I can hook it all up still. Anyone here know whether or not I can still hook up a compressor, expander and EQ to my rig. It's Vamp2,firebox into cubase LE.

You don't really need an outboard compressor or EQ for recording with a V-AMP. I have been recording direct with the V-AMP 2 and then the V-AMP pro for a couple of years with good results.

The V-AMP has an onboard compressor that can give you some limiting help going in, and then EQ on your PC with a plugin. It is really that simple. Two 1/4" Line outs from your V-AMP (really only need two if you are using stereo effects like delay or rotary speaker) into two line ins on your firepod. That's it man. Set your V-AMPS volume so that you are peaking comfortably below 0db, then hit record.

If you are not getting a loud enough signal, then something is wrong with your DAW, or the V-AMP. If you are clipping your converters, then turn the V-AMPs volume down, and or use more onboard compression. It makes no sense to spend money on an external effects to use with a modeler - you are still only running modeled sound through it.

This is wrong. You can still do hot inserts with a normalled patch bay. Just wire your stuff to a patch bay and make your own insert points. All an insert is is a point where a an signal can go through another device before hitting the line input on your whatever.

Well I guess it is only half wrong because your input could be a microphone in which case you would still need to to amplify the signal to line level before you could insert it into most of the devices you want to put it into ie a snare drum going into a preamp then inserted into a compressor and then going through channel eq and what not. So yeah guess so.

I am glad I have a nice mixer with 24 inserts.

I said WITHOUT buying anything extra. With just what I have, is it possible?
