Before saving your recordings????

What are some good things to do before saving your final project on cool edit pro2 to get a beter sound?

say your gonna save your songs to a cd for a demo or w/e
Would it be better to save as mp3 or wav?
What somethings to do before you save the file though? Like hardlimiting and all that?
