I guess it's too late, but whatever

I have heard mixed signals about Alesis as a company and their monitors. I have the monitors, but no one seems to be too specific about the problems or non-popularity with them. It seems that people who talk about them never have any real experience with them, just spout out what they have heard. Anyone have more specifics?

Nothing against Alesis from me, but their powered MKII monitors just didn't work for me. I bought a pair and auditioned them for a week in my very small studio. The low-end was so overwhelming that I couldn't work with them. Stuffing the bass ports with socks didn't help enough, and the absence of EQ switches gave me no options for adapting the sound to my room. I don't blame Alesis, though, because I know that my studio is quirky sonically and that I'm unable to change the room much (family considerations). I moved on to a monitor system (M-Audio BX5s + sub) that allowed me some EQ tweaking, and that did the trick.

By the way, I've noticed that the new line of budget Alesis' monitors has wisely added EQ switches. I've heard nothing about these new monitors, just seen the ads.

I think my room is sonically womdigiuos (my word). I haven't had anything but awesome response for mixing, it puts out just enough bass. However, when I want them to, I can play mainstream music through them and make them punch, but for mixing I think I have the right ones for my room.

And that's all that matters. I often read somebody's criticism of a piece of gear that I use and like, and I remind myself... different spaces, different supporting equipment, different tastes, different experiences. If it works well for me, it works well for me.
