Static on the tracks after recording

I'm starting to get static in my recordings. I'm playing a Roland KR-5 piano directly into a Behringer Eurorack UB802 into Cool Edit. I've never had this problem before. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing it now? The static is not constant, it is in random groups or waves of crackles. I don't hear it during the recording but during playback.

Thanks!

I'm using an Audiophile 2496 soundcard.

have you tried to record at a lower input level to see if it still does it?

Yes, but when I do that the noise level gets higher and I can't clean the hiss out. I have the line input level on the Behringer at 9:00, and the master at about 11:00. That is usually the best, but just today it has started this random static or crackling in the playback, in just a few places during the recordings. Do you think that I should turn the master level down as well?

You might give that a try. Since you don't hear it while recording, I am a little perplexed. Does it do it when the volume peaks or just randomly?

Randomly. It's really making me mad, at first I thought it was my dryer going on. Then, maybe my cell phone. Then, maybe the volume was too high. Then, I rebooted and turned everything off and on again. Then, I took all the cables out and put them back in. None of that was the problem, and it's never happened before this week. It is weird that it happens only during playback after it's recorded.

It also doesn't come out when I use the "remove crackle...." and other options to try to fix it in Cool Edit.

hmm. I could understand your frustration. Does it do it on tracks that were recorded on both inputs. Do the crackles show up on the wave image?

Yes, it happens on both of the inputs, I use 1, and 3/4 mainly. They don't show up on the images, I thought in spectral view I could see it but it's not there. I'm only a little frustrated. It has to be fixable, I just have to figure it out. I wish it were only blown speakers. That's easy.

No, it's totally different. I've recorded the exact same piano piece 6 times tonight, and each time the static or crackle played back at a different time - but once it was recorded on the track it was like embedded in the track. Each time I recorded it and listened to it it was at a different place. It almost sounds like a power surge kind of thing - but not exactly. It is in groups of crackles LOL I guess that's how I'd describe it. It's on soft as well as loud places in the music.

wait, if you want to get real industrious, try plugging the audiophile into a different PCI slot

Yah, I think we did that. I'll plug the card into another PCI slot, tomorrow. I'm tired of thinking about it too. Thanks so much!

Have you tried playing back the tracks out of another source or system ??

Like a different sound card or interface . If not try burning a stereo mix down and playing them in CD player .

I have a simular problem with a Tascam US -122 usb interface .

I get skips or dropouts in random spots on playback but it still records with no problem I just have to use a line out from my soundcard to hear my backing tracks and for mixing .

Someday soon I hope to step up to a Presonus 8 i/o firewire interface .

Have you tried bypassing the mixer all toghether yet? I would start there and see if you can isolate the problem a little better.
