compensating volume changes sweeping a filter

Guys

Just a quickie

While recording a fast arp pattern that is having its filter swept the volume tends to diminish too much at the top of the sweep and i need to try and compensate for it. I have the mixer set to have a decent level but need to somehow boost the signal somewhat at the higher levels to compensate for the lack of low level. ( hope you understand what im trying to explain ). Is this something i can accomplish with a compressor ?

Is there any way you could assign the same MIDI CC to control amplitude and filter cutoff? If so, you could assign it to increase volume at high cutoffs. The other possibility is using a multiband compressor. This will compress the volume at lower cutoffs, and not compress as much at high cutoffs. You'll need to fiddle a bit with the settings. I suggest a multiband compressor in this scenario as it tends to be more transparent.

Is your filter keyboard tracking turned up?

Well the problem is that when the LFO is in the bottom section of the frequency range ( or the bottom of its sweep ) the sound is quite loud as the filter is allowing the majority of the frequency range of the oscillators pass through but as the LFO rises in value and it gradually blocks the lower frequencies and in doing so removes quite a bit of the volume creating an unwanted fading in and out of the sound. I can sit at the mixer and compensate for this by small gradual movements of the channel slider but there has to be a better way to do this through hardware, plus i cant be fiddling with my mixer while Im playing another keyboard at the same time!

I`m willing to buy a decent multiband compressor if this will achieve the result i want , if this is what you guys suggest can you recommend a good brand with plenty of features ? preferably rack mountable.

thanks

I'm assuming you're using a Hi-pass filter then? Can't you also route the LFO to modulate the volume? What synth is this?

A rack Multiband compressor is going to set you back quite a bit. You might want to look at the Kurzweil KSP8, as although it's not cheap, at least it's got a bunch of other high quality FX and some unusual stuff to at least make it worth the money. I don't have a dedicated multiband compressor. For stuff like this I use the KDFX multiband compressor in my Kurzweil K2600.

You might be better off just getting a plugin. I think Voxengo makes one. So does Waves, but Waves tends to charge an arm and a leg.

The synth im using is a Korg MS2000B i can use the virtual patch section to route 4 patches, im using the second LFO to modulate the filter cutoff and the waveform control on one of the oscilators . Im using the other patches with the other LFO to modulate the pan and also one of the EG`s with a square wave.

I`ll check out the Kurzweil KSP8 tonight on the net

thanks for the info

Ok i have come to the conclusion after reading a bit more that I dont need a multiband compressor , but a regular compressor/limiter plugged into the insert section of the mixer for the channel i want to effect will do the trick.

looking at the following :-

PreSonus CL44
dbx 266XL
BBE MaxCom
Alto Alto Comp
ART TCS
Samson S•Com
Peavey CEL™-2a
