mixing drums

im a newbie at the whole recording thing and im recording a band thru a Behringer Eurorack UB2222FX-PRO Mixer and i have no idea how to eq the drums correctly i have everything else working pretty smoothley. im doing the recording live thru that mixer to a mr8 recorder. i have lots of sm57s and a beta for the kick. i just dont know about eq because the drums always come out sounding empty.

That just might be the problem. You might have *too* many SM57s.


They'll work fine on toms, Hi Hat and under your snare, but they tend to be a little lacking on other aspects of the drums (in my opinion).



One technique Jerry Finn (blink 182, GreenDay, Alkaline Trio) opens up about is the use of a Blue Mouse Mic on his snares with either an MD421 or SM57 underneath. He then heavily gates the bottom head and times the release at the BPM of the song. He then sends the bottom head direct to a reverb. Due to the natural "beefy" response of that mic, thats how it gets that wild, punchy and thick snare sound.

And that's just for snare.

Of course, my point isn't to have you buy the Blue Mouse mic. Just a small example emphasizing the use of different mics to paint your picture.

But more importantly, when you use multiple and like mics, you start having problems with your sound image.

It will give you examples of what are good mics to use for what purposes. And some basic 101 stuff on mixing drums.
