Who uses a Snake with your VS unit's during live recordings? Did you make it yourself or is it store-bought? I'm just trying to figure out if it would be cheaper for me to have one made/make it myself or go through one of the Music Stores to get one. How long is it (100' seems plenty long)? Does anyone make one specifically for the 2480?

If you have to hook up to the channel inserts on the mixer, just plug the 1/4 plugs to the first click not to interrupt the signal. Don't use TRS plugs in that case. And maybe put the recorder next to the mixer instead of 100 feet away??? You won't have balanced cables, so 100 feet away is not a good idea, anyway. Also, if they do use effects in the mixer inserts, you can make adapters to tap off the ring. If it's a real nice pro mixer, it may have 25 pin D-Sub connectors for balanced direct channel outs for recording. 8 balanced outs per connector. The recorder only uses 1/4 or 1/4 TRS for input. The D-Subs on the Roland are for SCSI drives or a digital R-Bus connections. Then you'll need 25 pin D-Subs at the mixer to 1/4 TRS at the recorder. With balanced lines you can go 100 feet then.

wpawley-
I'm sure lots of people use various snakes. A description of how exactly you use your VS unit will be useful in pointing you in the right direction.

The 2480 is also a mixer and I was thinking of using the mixer capabilities along with the recording capabilites, sorta killing 2 birds with one stone. 100+ feet of mic line is a lot of line and I know most cases I can get away with a lot less and have a lot less lose. I was just wondering if anyone is doing the Snake trick and how it has worked out.

I am using a 16 channel mixer hooked onto my BR1600. I just made 8 short leads and plugged them into the inserts on the mixer to the line inputs on the Br1600. Works very well, good sound + you can fine tune input sound using the mixer faders. I have attached a picture, hope it's clear enough to see.
