Question

I am a bass player by trade, looking for a good way to compose and record songs by myself. Is there a good piece of equipment that I could buy to fill in the other parts (especially drums and guitar) for me?

When I'm not jammin' with other musicians (I'm a bass player also) I use a Boss Dr202 drum machine, and record my
bass and drum tracks to Adat. My next sequence is to record my Rhythm gits and keys as I play back the recorded tracks . Drum machines are good if you can get by that" canned drum" sound or if you're looking for 'puter based drums, check out http://www.fruityloops.com

Cool Band in a Box

Cakewalk(I think) makes software called band in a box.
Never used it so I don't know if its worth a flip.
Find a good guitar player and drum software like
fruity loops, hammer head, drag and drop drummer,
or acid pro.You will be amazed at the stuff you can come up with.

Band in a Box has nothing to do with Cakewalk. It's made by PG Music

http://www.pgmusic.com/

and it's terrific. Really does a very decent job of coming up with quick generic parts for different styles, and if you want to get into it you can modify the styles that come with it or even create your own. It's not like having a crack band but then whatta ya want?
