mic purchase

Need to hear from you...not being able to afford the u87 yet, what comes REALLY close for 500-600 dollars or less. I'm thinking about the AT4050 but want to hear what you have to say before I go out and test drive. Thanks in advance

If you find a U87 quality mic at that price be sure & let me know!
Anyway, there are lots of good mics coming out in that price range these days, even a few tube models - so you'll probably get lots 'o opinions. I've been really happy with my R0DE NT-1, so I'd look into some of the other more expensive mics that they are offering.

I would try the 4050..to be honest, I really dont like the u87 much..it's really really hyped in the high end, really harsh (it sounds good on some, but it would not be the first mic I reach for). but hey, thats just my opinion.

I read an article in Tape Op where an engineer was talking about an AT-813a. It's about $160 and he says it sounds a lot like a U-87. At that price it would be a cheep experiment.

voice lessons?but i am mixing other vocalists,and they are competent without question.it's the mic. me,yes,i do need vocal lessons.i thought the 414 is like 1000$ .thanx all for the help advice,i am still not sure what i should go with.have any of y'all heard of joe meek?they got a new one in my budget.any good?any inputs

Pick the best one for spoken word, minimal live music recording, the Audio Technica 4050 or Neumann TLM 103

My opinion, the shure sm7 don't know what they cost but I 've heard really good stuff recorded with them.

You found the U87 having a "hyped" high-end? I must say U87s in general aren't known for their "hyped" high-end... In fact, they're known NOT to be...

Not only that, but lets remind everyone a U87i and a U87i are NOT the same.

The 4050 is a good suggestion to look into. Also, you might want to look into the Oktava MC-012 with the RTT M1 cap from The Sound Room. http://www.oktava.com

about your question on the joemeek, I have a vc6q and I'll tell you, that thing is a beauty to hear especially when paired with a 414,

I ll also tell you that many hit songs were recorded with mics like a 414b/uls, an AT 4050, and also some of the groove tubes mics, so they will be worth checking into.

The new 414 tlII is basically a 414 with a C12 CAPSULE ,and you might be able to get one used for 5-600. New, they cost $900.

finally, you might need to upgrade your cables. I have some cheap cables and they are hurting me bad right now. I can't wait to upgrade to monster 1000

Mmmm... I MYSELF still wouldn't GENERALLY label stock U87s as "?" bright.

Of course, I QUICKLY admit the U87ai price is not NEARLY worth it and there are PLENTY out there sounding JUST AS good and better for quite cheaper and as much.

Oh, also, lets remind everyone there IS a difference between an AKG 414 TL/II, B/ULS, etc., too.

Now THAT would be a good comparision...! Which is a "better" all around mic; the 4050 or 414 B/ULS?

I'm not saying ANYTHING until I hear some good audio comparisions...

no,i meant this mic by joemeek,it's another large diaphragm studio condenser,at 8th street music for 195$,i have heard nothing but good things(once again,i guess we should never take anybody's words for things)about joemeek,i can't imagine their studio mics sounding all that bad?what i don't understand is the price,i mean yeah for me,200$ is not chump change,but in the arena of recording mic's,200$ is pretty enrty level stuff.care to divulge on this?
