When recording stereo there seems to be something keeping my peaks down

I was experimenting and recording today and noticed when I put both of my channels to "Stereo" instead of left and one right the levels won't go above -6. What would be the cause of this? I can still hear the peaks and all, but it wont go above that in Audition.
