Sure!

If all the other instruments pause whenever the singer sings.

Otherwise....

See Mad Audio's reply.

If you think about it....considering current technology....it would be impossible to completely cut out the vocal track. Even if you could cut out some of it, it would horribly disturb the other parts of the track.

There are some EQ plug-ins with presets that will take out most of the vocal. But the rest of the song ends up sounding like garbage. That's why when you go to Karake bars you generally hear re-recorded versions of instrument tracks unless the original record company released accompaniment tracks like they use at weddings and churches and such.

I'm confused. If you use sonar 4 just go back into the saved mix and mute the vocals Yes, you'll have to master it again if it is already but that is the nice thing about computer recording. Am I missing something here?

I think so, or perhaps I am

I think the original poster is looking for a DIY Karaoke, where you can take the vocal out of a song on the radio perhaps.

There is a product called the Thompson Vocal eliminator that was advertised in my Union paper for many years, google it. I doubt it worked, it just had a funny picture so I remember it. Yes many vocals are in a certain range, so you can take some of that range out and be left with the Bass drum and piccolo, but other than that its gonna sound pretty bad.

There is also an old theory about if the vocals are mixed down the center of the track you can invert the phase, swap the stereo image and you should be able to get rid of most of the vocals, but if it's for Karaoke, look for a good MIDI file! You can get away with some sound fonts and decent MIDI Sound Canvas/DXI/VST plugins ;-)
