Rough Mix for a Client

This is one of those rare oportunities where I had a really talented songer songwriter with a great vibe and i just wanted to capture it and not mess it up... How did i do? The song is long so i added some percussion to give it some momentum. Any comments on mix and/or production would be splendid!

I can hear a lot of what sounds like softknee compression...especially on the guitar. If you could pull back on that a bit, I think it would clear up the mix a lot. Did you track the vocal and the guitar at the same time?

Dude, that sounds like a real horn...is it? If it's not, you did a GREAT job with it.

Personally, I think the tune would benefit by bringing in the percussion/Djiembe/bass a lot earlier...I mean, I like the way that the song builds, but I want it to move earlier.

Yeah, it's growing on me the longer the song goes.

That blue note @ 5:13 on the horn seems really off...maybe edit that out? I dunno'.

Just ideas. Pretty cool.

yeah the vox and guitar are recorded together... yes its a real trumpet, the guy was not nearly as good as the singer/songwriter but it has a erie imperfectness about it. thanks for the comments

The vocals are recorded perfectly IMHO - catches his nuances and sounds very full. The guitar is pretty good, but it's too bad he didn't do a better job of tuning it (or his fretting causes inconsistant intonation between chords).

May I ask what you used for a vocal mic and what provided the pre-amp section on that?

Vocal mic is a AT4033 and guitar mic is a Rode NT4. We went through a Alesis board (can't remember the model off hand)...
