Yo 8 carats:
You buy a drum machine, or drum program, and set up a pattern or pick a pre sent and record drums/keyboard. The drum box sets the beat without a click track. Then, overdub bass, if needed, and whatever else you want. When you say "keyboard" I assume you're talking about a synth? Some synths have drums built in but I have always used a drum machine. Some synths have sequencers and that opens up another world and type of recording tracks. Merry Christmas Green Hornet ![]() |

Only way to make beats with a keyboard is to ensure that the keyboard has drumkits built into it.
Its up to you how you want to create the beats, but using a sequencer is the easiest way of recording and constructing grooves. Dags

do you guys record each drum separetly? Like first bass, then snare, then high hat etc? I like to record the bass and snare at the same time in the sequencer but then how would I be able to pan it? I would have to do it individually wouldn't I?

Yes you must do them seperatly if you want good results. You'll be able to EQ them, pan them, compress them if needed and so on.So make a beat and export track by track by muting the other tracks.
I usualy record kick first on one track, then a snare on the other, then some hats on thirs and what not.All midi on seperate tracks.Yes its worth it. ![]() |

so you're saying I should use MIDI when programming my drums beats? Couldn't I just connect my synth in the line in of my audio interface and record them as an audio track?

Sure, but unless you have sub millisecond timing they wont be of much use

oh that's right. I can only quantize MIDI. You can't quantize audio can you.

You can, but it's much easier to work in MIDI.

To quantize the audio you will have to do some major chop chop
vs click quantize button ![]() |

oh okay. I guess i'm afraid of MIDI because I havent really worked with it. Well I have a little bit in my triton's sequencer. But never tried turning it into audio or anything.
