Building a pro-studio

I am currently looking at buying a building and converting it to a pro-recording studio. I am a property developer by day and a musician by night so this has always been a dream of mine.

I need to know 'roughly' the cost of equipment for a good quality studio. It doesnt have to be like Bob Rocks studio, just something professional that would draw engineers interest with current gear.

The building is detached one story unit c.120sq.m. and is in four rooms of similar size. The ceilings are 11ft which is quite high (is this a problem?).

What kind of gear would I need? Are desks important anymore? Most engineers I talk to exclusively use ProTools, so a 36 track Mackie could be a big waste of money.

Just looking for ideas and feedback for the moment. The building is not cheap and the fit out costs are high so any quality information would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

you might want to take this question over to www.johnlsayers.com in the studio design forum - include all your location details and a simple sketch of the building and let the folks there have at it... based on my limited knowledge though, a seriously pro studio can run anywheres from $100K to $1M just for the building, facilities, soundproofing, and treatments, and probably another $100K-$1M for equipment...

I know the costs can run very high if you want certain gear, I'd probably spend about 200k on gear after about 100K on the necessary contract work (soundproofing, 3 phase power, structural alterations etc). I'll check out that site, thanks for the information.
