eggcrates do nothing acoustically, and offer a good method of burning your house down.

Acoustical foam eats higher frequencies, and passes the lower frequencies, for a disgustingly boomy space.

Rigid fiberglass is your best best for overall broad-frequency absorption. Since we know nothing about your space dimensionally or how things are setup, that's the best advice you can hope for at this point.

There's a lot of info here...do a search first for egg crates and see how many knocks you find on that material. Then do a search for sound proofing then another for acoustic treatment (they're different btw).

Like Frederic said...don't use egg crate unless you're looking to void your homeowners insurance when it comes time to cash in on the house fire!

Stay safe.

I don't have the most soundproof room in the universe, but I was able to really deaden the space by nailing up double bed ripple foam in a strip halfway up the wall around the room. Got rid of most of that hard-surface reflection.
Now if I can only quieten my windtunnel G4 Mac!

No.
You are barking up the completely wrong tree. Soundproofing takes mass and having all paths of escaping sound blocked. There aren't any ways of doing it both well and cheap, and you certainly aren't going to do it with cardboard, eggcrate or otherwise.

Soundproofing is going to take construction efforts. There is nothing you can do by hanging or stacking stuff in your work space.

Again, do a search for Soundproofing.

The laws of physics don't give a damn about your "budget".......... you want to stop sound transmission in or out of an area? That requires specialized construction. Period.

And throwing up elaborate moving blankets is NOT considered specialized construction...

There's no such thing as "cheap" soundproofing...............

The blanket wont make much of a difference, it is more for the acoustics(the way the room sounds), which is a whole different thing. They are false advertising it. The best place to start, i believe, is sealing all the places where air will leak, ie. around doors with rubber seals, and if your doors are really light i suggest adding a layer of MDF, (like the picture). Secondly if you have any windows block them up. If you can't permenantly, make a plug out of MDF, with rubber seals round, the exact size of the window frame, so that it just slots in(like pic). If your windows don't allow for this, make "shutters" out of MDF with magnets strips all the way round them and on the windows(like pic). If you have any holes or gaps in the walls or round borders/frames fill these with caulk. You sound now have an airtight room, which should help in soundproofing, not fully, but it may be enough for what you need. If not, you will have to add mass, eg. a second wall, (made from drywall) which is separated from the existing wall with an air gap, which means lots of work, effort, and money. Ok, so if what i first suggested is sufficient, then great, only thing is, you will have to breathe. I will let someone else handle the breathing problem, as i am unsure.

Doggone Bruce, you've finally become an "grumpy old fart" member, regardless of your age. Welcome to the club. Don't worry though, there are "remission" days.

I don't think you should be doing that. Your ears will start ringing and there's no cure that I'm aware of. Are you "soundproofing" for purposes of recording loud sound sources such as drums or gutar cabinets or do you just want to blow your ear drums without anybody knowing?

Right, and that takes mass, and sealing as has been said several times. That's why the audio isn't transmitting through your walls - mass.

But that doesn't cut down the reflections inside...
