Unhappy

Someone set me straight, if you would. If I were to record just me and my guitar and wanted a great sound, it would seem to me that I should be able to do that with having to spend fortunes. Tell me if I am on the right track...

It seems to me that if I were to buy an 8-tracking digital machine, something like a Rode Classic for vocals, a couple of mics for my guitar and a few v-72 tele mic pres that I should be able to get some sweet sounds. What else should I be looking at? Are mic pres as important with miking guitars (electric & acoustic) as they are with miking vocals?

I cant appreciate your help enough.

Why not use your computer for recording/editing your music?

So-called "soundcards" are available that double as mic/instrument pres. Multitrack software is available for as little as $35US(N-Tracks). The editing features available for computer-based systems are easier to use than on the Minidisc or Roland VS systems. 'Cause who wants to squint at a tiny backlit display?

I'm not familier with the "v-72 tele mic pres" you mention. There are tons of options out there. Pres with compression/EQ/DeEsser/Tubes/Solid State/Enhancers and pres with a simple volume knob and nothing more.

What are you using for monitors? Do you have outboard FX devices? Give us a little more info and what kind of budget you are looking to spend. The good folks here have tons of experience and info. And the only one that bites is Riley357.

Well unfortunately I am unable to use my computer for recording...it isn't mine. I am going to go the route of a digital 8-track recorder for sure. Things you aksed about, and by the way, thank you ever so much for offering some time to help me; I dont have any real gear yet. I am going to have some money to put together a great "idea station" for my ensemble material and I am hoping that I will be able to have enough quality that I will be able to press to cd, music that includes just my guitar and my voice.

Reduced, I would like to get enough quality gear that I will be able to record my acoustic and voice and wind up with a superb sound. This gear would also double as decent demo gear for my band situations. I intend on pushing past simple idea-stage things with my band and working out record parts beforehand with my band, multi-tracking and effects. Things that will save me much money down the road and will allow me to experiment. I understand that the costs grow exponentially and not linearly the larger the setup to put together.

So I am looking at getting some fine mics for an acoustic, a wonedrful mic for my vocals(~$1500), a fine digital 8-Track andd whatever outboard gear that is neccessary to get what I need.

So again I thank you...

Talking

Yo 114 and all the letters:

You can do some nice stuff on a low end box or a high end box, with a few accoutrements: a reverb box, a mic pre, and a good vocal mic.

Best way to do it with home stuff: do the music on your stringed thing first; then, do the vocal on the over dub.

It's easy; just sing your vocal[to yourself] as you do the music on the strings; then, [leave yourself some room for expression with the music] sing man. Just sing. Then edit and edit and mix and mix and adjust and adjust the dials and EQ and volumes and pans and ambience and then, maybe, you'll have a nice cut.

It's work man. It's work.
