Gonna get a minidisk recorder and stereo mic for....

I plan on getting a minidisc recorder for recording band practice, live shows, impromptu jams, etc. Do the cheaper ones ($150-$200)have respectable A to D converters in them, at least on the order of a cheapo soundcard? I suppose they can't be total shit, but I'm curious to hear what you folks have to say.

I'd worry more about the audio compression that is part of the minidisc format than I would about the quality of the converters.

BUT, on the other hand - minidisc is a definite plus over cassettes in terms of overall sound quality. A mixdown unit, however, it definitely AIN'T!

I highly recommened using the mini disc recorder for your application. bvaleria is certainly right about disc over cassette. However, you might want to reconsider your price range... I believe even a decent four tracker is still 500-600 dollars respectively. You might be able to get the Fostex 4 tracker for about 300... Which ever direction you choose I really believe you've made the right descision... also keep in mind that during the past four or so years mini disc recording has become increasingly popular... Many of the bugs and problems that haunted the older machines have now been worked out... At any rate you can't go wrong recording digital. Good luck. take care.
