incredibly stupid question, really

Ok I warned you...

Sonar 3 ( or any Cake product)

I am recording Drums from my JV 1010 module, nothing fancy. For various reasons I want them on seperate TRACKS, they will of course use channel 10.

Can I record KICK on track one and SNARE on track 2 at the same time LIVE while playing?

I understand the other way would be just playing KICK all the way through a song, then doing another track with just snare. I am spotaneous and that would suck.

OH WAIT: I can arm two tracks, play live, and both tracks will have both Kicks and Snares. So just edit out snares from one, edit kicks from the other.

DOES THIS MAKE SENSE. Hold me

Hey David,

Yes, you can do it as you just prescribed. Or you could just record one track with both and then cut/paste the snare or kick into the separate track ... that might be just as easy.

Remember though, that you're still not going to get individual drum levels out of the JV1010 (which I have too) by this "track" method. For when you send the midi volume level signal back to the Roland for the snare or any drum track, it's going to reduce ALL the drum levels that are on midi channel 10. That was about half a day's discovery for me once, as I tried to figure out WTF was going on as I was trying to get individuals levels out it.

On the other hand, what you CAN do is send one (or both) of the separate tracks to a DIFFERENT snare or kick device (if you wish) ... say perhaps the DRM008 which is included in Sonar (and I strongly suggest you learn this device - it will become your midi mix down unit of choice) ...

That way, you'll have full separate volume and eq controls over the individual drums ... so you can twist them into something unrecognizable to your heart's content. Always feel free to PM me with any questions, as I've explored this avenue in depth in my early thirst for "real drum" sounds for my music (which you have) ... settling eventually ... (as you know) ... only for real drums.

On the way, I gathered quite a bit of knowledge though...

Best,

Kev.

btw- Did you know that you can load the JV1010 profile into Sonar so that all the instrument/voice readings come up on the channel you're designated for it? That way, you can select the voicing choices right through Sonar.

Thanks Kev, seems I wasnt so stoopid after all

Yes, I knew about the volumes all being connected. I want to use stuff like DrM008 and have separat eq's, which is why I want them on different tracks.

BTW Kev, I sent you a letter over at the other place, and I am not sure it went through. It was a HUGE thank you letter for your CD, I urge everybody here to go buy it, it sounds terrific. For some reason, RP and AOL dont get along, and a lot of the PM stuff seems to get lost. I will try again here, thanks for the help/

Hey DK-

Did not get the letter. Thrilled you liked the new album.

Best,

Kev.
