Roland 1680 IDE Drive

Where would I get one, what does it look like and how would I install? I just bought a 1680 and I was under the impression that it was ready to go, but it's not. Preferably internal because I travel and want to take it with me. Please help

Because

when I turn it on the first thing I see is Initial Drive, a picture that says IDE on top of it with a no symbol (circle w/diagonal line).

Could there be an un-formatted drive in it?

The VS1680's appendices have a list of compatible IDE drives. Basically, it's the same kind of hard drive you use in your personal computer. You can get these inexpensively via eBay, tigerdirect (and other computer wholesale places), or you can r@pe a PC that no-one in your house (or work) is using.

Installation procedures are in the User Guide (it's easy: unscrew drive cover, insert carefully, re-screw cover, start up unit and format).

You might only be able to put up to a certain size drive in the 1680 (20G?, 40G?). Research that.

The Owner's Manual, User Guide, Appendices, and other VS1680 documents can be found online in PDF format by going to the Roland site, or googling "roland + vs1680 + manual" and clicking on the very first link given (at least that's how I did it).

Cheers.

My very first post!

Ok check this out. my screen shows 1-ABS Time/Length of recording
2-Init Drive IDE Unformat 727GB
3-Partition 2000MB
4-Physical Format Off
5-Surface Scan Off
When I choose to Execute it asks Initialize IDE OK Yes/No
If I choose yes it thinks and then gives me a message Drive Time Out!
What do I do?
