What mic on high hat?

Just wanted to know which mic or mics would capture the high hat best. I have a Nady CM90 and CM88 but those are cheapy mics and I don't think those will do the job. I think I'm just going to get a SM57 for the high hat but wanted to check with everyone before I spent the money. Just didn't want to put my money in the wrong place. Thanks.

I personally wouldn't recommend a SM-57 for hi-hat. If you have the money to soend on a SM-57 (99.00), save some money and get an Octava MK-012($69). They sound really good on hi-hats. Here's a question though, do you really need to mic your hi-hats? Your overheads should pick them up quite well. I never mic hi-hats, but alot of other people.

I guess I just like having control over the volume of my high hat. Sometimes I like it to be a little louder but don't want to boost up the overhead volume. Anyway, thanks for the advice on the mic.
I did a serch on that Oktava MK-012 Mic and they seem to be alot more than $69.00, where do you get them this cheep? Thanks.

No, dude, don't get them on-line. Go to Guitar center. They have them for 69.00. I'd hurry though, they're not stocking them anymore. If they don't have them at a store near you, have them call out of state stores. They'll order them for you from one of thier other stores. Do a search for Octava in the mic forum.

i'm pretty sure that the guitar center mk012s are the cheap chinese ones and not the russian-made...

just thought i'd throw that out there. also, i've got the russian 012s and they're crazy-good as overheads.

I'm not getting into whether there chinese or Russian. In fact, that's the whole reason why GC won't carry them any more. All I know is I bought them about 2 months ago and they sound awesome, reguardless if they were made in China OR Russia. If you want listen to this clip..............I used the Octavas for overheads.

HA! Just went and checked it out...Very cool of you to mention everyone who helped you. Good thing I liked your drum sound. Would have been weird if I thought it sucked and then read that you had me to thank for it...hehe.
Well, your time, patience and ability to take advice sure has paid off, they sound great.

I forgot to mention - you need to find one used - they're actually discontinued.... but very worthwhile if you find one in good shape!

Whats your budget?

I use either, a km184, Blue dragonfly or a Royer 121.

But...ive also gotten good results from a v67g.

To be honest, who cares? These days the Chinese are doing virtually everything with the ISO9000, so their quality control shouldn't be any worse overall than the Russians. Heck, the new lower lines of Sonor Drums are made in China these days, and those things kick major butt.

For me, since i have no experience with the Oktavia's, I'd suggest MXL 603's, 990's, or 991's. I have all three, and all three would work fine for that purpose, although the 990's would look a little funny, since they look like a Large Diaphragm Condenser, but it 's the same mic element that is inside the 603.
