SG stands for Solid Guitar

It was supposed to be the last Les Paul model developed in the late 50s but due to a dispute between Les and Gibson he let his contract lapse. They couldn't legally call it a Les Paul then so they kept the developmental name of Solid Guitar. It was a chuck of solid mahogany, double cutaway with the twin horns and a les paul pickup configuration.Probably the two greatest SG guys are Angus Young and the late Frank Zappa.Older SGs from the 50s and 60s are highly prized as rock guitars for their ballsy tone and light weight.Ever wear a Les Paul on your shoulder for 4 hours on stage? The junior and melody maker are similar solid body-set neck mahogany guitars with similar feel and playability.

Late '80's SG - No pickguard

Introduced in early 80's had one or two humbuckers and a 'bad-ass' type wraparound bridge. I think the 2 p'up model only had three knobs - although I can't remember why I think that! (It's a bitch getting old:-)

Optional Kahler whammy in 84 or 85, and a Floyd Rose optional a little later. Also could be had with a tune-a-matic about the same time as the Floyd.
Came in red, pewter, or white. I heard it came in pink, too, but never saw one or heard of anyone who'd seen one that colour.

Went to 2 pickups only about the same time as the Floyd was available.

Called an SG Special. Got a pickguard in the early '90's.

Hope this helps.

I have seen the pinky one. It has an oragne type tint. It is butt ugly, but belongs in the 80s guitar collection. Who knows, CC probably has a few of them. Pink guitars that are supposed to be nice looking...ug
