DMP3 for drums

Hey all,
I've been recommended by a drummer to use my newly purchased DMP3 pre (arriving Friday...for my Saturday Session!) on the overheads. The music is by Citizen one (www.citizenonemusic.com). Bass (through an Avalon U5-that I'm picking up in an hour!!!), electric guitar, acoustic guitar, drums and vocals. At the very least we will be recording electric guitar, bass and drums live...then overdubbing the acoustic and vocals.

My question: For drums I have Samson C02's for overhead, A Beta52 for the bass drum (or the Sennheiser 421), and a 57 for the snare.

What should I use the DMP3 for: A) the oh's, or B) the kick and snare?

It is folk soul ala Bill Withers, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield stuff. If you check out my last recording for this guy at the website above, I had no preamps for that and I was frustrated as hell with the drum sounds. This time however, I have more time to get sounds and I am thankful as all get up!

I was advised once somewhere here to use it for oh's but I wanted to post this to many and get thoughts from as many as I can. THANKS
Any advice is appreciated.

Much love,
Cuzme

I don't know. I don't usually plan that far ahead! If I see anything interesting in the City Paper, I'll let you know.

Tracked probably 10 songs with it so far and I'm truly impressed with it on overheads. Comprared to my digi pre's these are much much cleaner, really picks up the kit well. Best 150 bucks I've ever spent on a pre amp.

I use the DMP3 for overheads pre as well. (mics are MXL 603s)
compare to the beri mixer`s pre, the DMP3 picks up the signal much better.
they are much much cleaner, quieter and give me more detail on the sound I recorded.

and the gain of the DMP3 is very high.....as for drum oh I cant dial the gain knob over 11'o clock position.....It doesnt clip itself, but it clip my Delta 66!!

Thanks y'all. With 100% voting for overheads, that pretty much answers that question!

if you just have only a dmp3 and a mixer pre (assume its suck), I would suggest you use the dmp3 for oh~

I use my DMP3 for the kick and snare because I heard that dynamic mics are more picky about preamps.

Also cause my MXL603s I use for OHs are too hot and clip my ADAT converters using the DMP3 (even turned all the way down.)

????? Must be something wrong with that unit. I run ksm109's thru it with no problems, and it has a pad built in, not sure why yours is clipping.

This is a very good question. One worth quite a bit of thought.

My first reaction would be to want to use it on kick and snare. I feel that since they are usually loudest in the mix I would want them to have the best quality. On the otherhand, if a poor preamp is used on overheads and the cymbals make me want to run off screaming because of harshness, I would want to make sure to give the overheads the best treatment.

Think I'll wait on voting for a bit.

I'd definatley use the DMP3 on the OHs. Heck, that's what I do! The OH's SHOULD be responsible for the entire mix of the drums, while the kick and snare mics are there to add more punch and body.

Good point Phil, but in the end the other pre´s should be as good as DMP3, the whole kit couldn´t sound balanced.
What if you have a Soundcraft M8, is there a big difference between them?.
Thanks
