My Current Setup Sounds Like Crap

i just bought an m-box 2, an Oktava MK319 condenser mic which i plug into the m-box2 preamps, and i record into protools. The problem is, i am not at all satisfied with the way the vocals come out. im an amatuer at using protool plugins and mixing, but im sure my mic sucks or i need some extra equipment (like a compressor for the mic)? my price range for a new mic is $400-500 and im recording rap vocals. i am also looking for any other gear like a compressor in the $400 range to make my vocals sound better. if anyone knows the best mic for rap vocals in that price range, let me know please (and compressor too)

Do some reading up on gain structure and make sure you are getting the most out of the equipment you have........also what about your room?.....the sound of the room in the mic can really make stuff sound bad...(or good)......it might be more cost effective to invest in a $99 box of Auralex foam........Although a tracking compressor is something you will eventually want.

What specifically is it that you don't like about how the vocals come out? If you could describe the sound and what you don't like about it, that would help us give you advice.
