Thumbs up yea!!!!!!!!! new hi-hats!

found a used (old) pair of sabian hi-hats in a local music store and picked them up. i've been looking for a new set of hats for a while (my old set zildjin zxt titanium, don't buy them, they suck)

got to record them yesterday.... and....

they sound like hi-hats!!!!!!!

yea, i know it doesn't sound like a big surprise but in my experience most hi hats (maybe i just hang with a bunch of broke bit*%es) don't sound like what i hear recorded professionally.

these do, sound just like hi-hats are supposed to.

share in my happiness!

cool. i'm going to get some new hi-hats pretty soon. mine sound ok (they're a mismatched set of zildjians), but they are too loud.

you can tell that they're old, but i have no idea how old (you can still read the sabian logo on top, but barely)
and inside they have stamped
35cm 14"

Recording shitty hihats does really suck, cool you found a pair that don't suck. I just had a metal drummer in who's girlfriend bought him a new pair of Paiste's I'm sure they were cheaper ones and he thought they rocked until I mic'd them, his tuned changed and he was like "oh, these kinda suck". Had to resort to my 20 year old zildjians. I'm not sure what type of Paiste's they were, they were kind of dingy looking but were brand new. Would you guys say its a safe bet that most of the higher priced hihats sound ok recorded, I"m about to invest in some newer ones and I'm afraid what I'll hear at GC won't be whats reproduced in the recordings.

you can take that to the bank. unless your studio is a room full of cymbals with a glass dorr and windows your recording will not sound like what you hear in the GC cymbal room.

I swear by Sabian AAX hi-hats. Love 'em although my first set was better than my second. The sound is just classic.

Nope, it's not a minor thing.

Trust me - I had some camber hi-hats for a long time and they were god awful! So congrats on the new hi-hats!

good thing about Sabian hats is they stay nice forever. at my school we have 3 pairs of hats, all the same age, 2 are Zildjian, 1 is Sabian. The Sabians sound waaaaaaaay better.

Nice find.

those are....AH....no comment...

that's what happens when a cymbal company tries to get creative :

Either they end up with something pretty cool like the Sabian evo. effekts crash, or they pull a Zildjian ZXT

anyways, congrats on the hats

I love those sound edge hats. They sound awesome. My high school had them on the kit for jazz band, and they were excellent, especially for jazz. They were decent for rock/pop stuff, but they really shine in jazz apps.

By sound edge do u mean the Paiste's? I have a pair, and they sound great closed, but their open sound is too bright. I plan to get a pair of Dark Energies or Dark Crisps as secondary hi hats.

Yeah, I was talking about the Paiste's. They do tend to get bright, but, to be honest, it never really bothered me at all. Maybe we just got lucky!

Wow those things would not work for jazz in my case . Of course, I tend to smash the stick into the hats, so I could probably make a tradtionals light hi hat sound like a pair of rude hats (i need to work on volume control).
