It all depends on what type of music you produce. As far as producing hip-hop, like I do I have found that making and using your own sounds is the best way to produce tracks, and from what I know many of hip-hop's foremost producers (dr. dre, timbaland, manny fresh, etc.) use their own sounds. When I first began producing beats in my studio i purchase around 4 akai sound cds for like $120 a piece, the only one i have ever used with an regularity is the loop cd. For the most part the sounds produced with the sample cds sound really corny and generic. So be careful before you spend all that money on them.
