Not loud enough

Hi, this must be a really simple one but it's driving me mad. I usually record my guitar by plugging guitar into amp into POD into mixer into soundcard and this has worked fine. Recently I decided I didn't really like the POD sounds so have disconnected it and now go guitar into amp into mixer into soundcard. The problem now though is that I can't get enough volume into my recording software without cranking the amp way up. Obviously there is something in the POD which enables it to output at high volume but I would really appreciate somebody explaining exactly what I have to obtain to put in the loop instead of the POD.
Any help would be most appreciated

explain how you are connecting your amp to the soundcard -- line out, headphone out, effect out, etc.? what amp, soundcard, and cables are you using?

STOP PRESS - Just discovered that this amp is notorious for an under-powered line out. Just proved it by plugging in another amp
Looks like I'll have to look elsewhere.

cable from line out of amp into one of the inputs in the mixer (behringer eurorack 1002). All other connections are exactly the same as I have had for months - eg
Tapeout on mixer into line in on soundcard and line out of soundcard into Tapein.
CtrlRoom Out into hi-fi system. With this new configuration I have to turn level to max on mixer and also turn amp right up (very loud !). Even with this, the vu meters go nowhere near clipping. In case it was software I've tried Cooledit, N-Tracks, Powertacks Pro and Audacity with the same result. Soundcard is Audigy2 which although not perfect has worked fine up to now.
With the POD connected - guitar into POD, POD into amp input and POD headphones into mixer input, levels are far higher and no hum or hiss (well not too much anyway).
