looking for a recomendation....
Hi all. I thought I had an sm57 and a few other dynamic mics put away in storage from my last band I was in but now that I've had my Tascam a while I still can't find my old microphones, and the only mic I had (cheap Peavey vocal mic) DIED.
So I need a new mic(s) and am on a tight budget. What would the good people here recommend as far as a fairly cheap condensor mic that could handle guitar cabs, acoustic guitar, and (eventually) vocals? I want to see what results I get using it alone and messing around with placement but also want to try pairing it with a dynamic mic for mic'ing guitar cabs. btw, I have a preamp with 48v phantom power so thats not an issue.

Audio Technica AT-4040. Nice all purpose LD condensor. Alternatively, you could also try an AT-4033. Not as flat as the 4040, but flatters some voices and instruments. Check the used market. You should be able to get either for @$200.

Hmm, anything decent in the $100 range so that I might be able to find one used for under $100?

You might also try RE-15 or RE-18. Really great older dynamic mics that work well on lots of things. All should be under $100 - in some cases substantially under. The "vocal" version of the RE-15 was the RE-16 which is alright too. The RE-10 and the RE-11 were the "not quite up to quality control" versions of the RE-15 and RE-16 which only meant that they did not have the consistent sound required for those models. They are nonetheless very good mics. They will just sound a little different. They can sometimes be picked up for less than $50 each. I believe that Elvis used the RE-15 and RE-16. I'd take one of these in preference to some of the cheap condensors on the market, although some of the MXL stuff isn't bad. I have an MXL V67B that is OK and cost @$89 new when Sam Ash blew out the remaining Mars inventory. Same as the V67G except in black, of course. I haven't looked, but these have got to be pretty cheap on the used market now.

Also I'm pretty sure it's discontinued considering the fact that it's not on their site anymore.
