Question Is free songwriting contest a normal thing?

There's a related thread here. http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=174640

Almost every kind of songwriting/singing contests in my area is entrance fee free. You can even submit as many songs as you like. I'm just wondering whether it's a normal thing to have these free opportunities. So maybe the judges are randomly put together and some of them are even less musically experienced than most competitors...

I have entered where there was a fee and some where there was no fee. The contest that John Mayer is running I think is free....

Local and regional contests are more likely to be free than national/international contests. That said, read the fine print....
