getting snare not to pop out 1000db higher in mixdown
Any tips on getting snare or kick to "pop out" less on the meters or in the mixdown waveform? using a compressor with zero attack a/o limiter sounds like ass(at least when I do it). any tips on doing this in a way that sounds good or is more transparent? Apparently Tom Lord Alge compresses kick and snare in this sort of way??? Also, any tips for me on how to not be a dumbshit?

If the snare sounds right like that, why mess with it?
Snares used to "pop out" of the mix all the time... |

Trust your ears more than the meters. If the sound is too loud for your ears try compressing the overheads and bringing the snare mic down.

Is this one of those cases of trying to get the mix loud? There's a few snare sounds that don't go there (without pull it down in the mix). |

I understand where this guy is going. I have the same problem on my last mix. the bass drum pops way out of the mixdown waveform. thats how I wanted it to sound. but its making my mixdown file RMS -20 db or so. without the kick sticking out I would probably get at least 7 more db out of the mix, which would be a reasonable RMS. when trying to limit to get the volume up, the sound of the bass drum falls apart. so what can you do???

Personally, I miss those nice peaky tones -particularly on the snare. Wayne |
