Recording horns is such a BLAST!!!!!

So, I have this ongoing praise CD project I've posted about a few times... Well, I had the sax player in to do her parts, and you just gotta hear this...

The tune is Jesus, Lover of my Soul, by Daniel Grul, John Ezzy, and Steve McPherson. (Hillsongs Australia is the popular recording). This is the rhythm section and most of the horns (missing two trombone parts) and the vocals are still to be added. Anyway, this is a quick and dirty mix, nowhere near the final, but I wanted y'all to hear it. I had such a good time recording the brass!!

Jesus, Lover Of My Soul

Nice! What mics/preamps did you use for the horns?

Thanks Don!! The horns are acquired via my VERY underrated little Marshall condenser, direct plug into my Korg D1600, (much better D/A converters than my old VS-880EX, but still lacking a little warmth) then the tracks are pulled off the D1600 into Audition, I've only done a little minor compression and EQ on them so far...

But, I did just get my Radius tube compressor fixed, so going forward that will be in the signal chain...

I've been waiting to hear more of this.....

This is another great sounding track. Everything played really well - tight and groovin'.

Each instrument is easy to make out and follow individually - nice balance and panning....

The horns pick it up a notch in between, and over top of, where I imagine the vocals will be.

This has a lot of depth with all the instruments (and more to come you say!).

How many tracks do you think you'll lay down for this song by the time it's done?

G

As usual, Phil, I have nothing to offer you but praise. This is pro sounding. Ready for prime time. I can hear Earth Wind and Fire singing over this. Your musicianship is unparalled, and those horns just put it over the top. Would love to hear this with the vocals. Great stuff, my friend.

Thanks G! There will be two trombone parts added to the trumpets and saxes, and at least ten vocal tracks before I'm done! Should be fun!

You're too kind, dude. You didn't even tweak me for putting out what to me is a dry, bottom heavy mix! When are we gonna do something together?

The mix is really 3-dimensional... well done. Very fine arrangement as everything has its place. It's complex but not crowded sounding. Horns sound good... might be nice to hear just a little more splat from them.

Thanks Tim!! I'm reeling in the "splat" a little on purpose for the moment, because the vocal part is very dense as well, and I don't want it to be lumpy soup, ya know?

Geez man, your stuff sounds as pro as it comes. Love the horns in there. For this or any of your songs, that'd be a cool to hear a trumpet solo kind of like guitar solo style. Just something I think would sound cool.

Nice work

Buddy, "dry" is my middle name. I don't like to hear too much effects on things. Besides, I know you're not finished yet and you got to leave room for the vocals.

Tourettes,

It's an original MXL.
LIKE THIS, only older. It cost me $78 buckaroos.

Thanks snake! I have another piece that I'l post that has solos in it; in fact it's instrumental only, so it's all solos.

And here I thought "Loops" was your muddle name...

You are getting that standard praise and worship sound very nicely. Great job!
How'd you do the piano, if you don't mind me asking?
