Headphone amp

Looking at the samson s-phones and behringer ha4700 headphone amps. They look to be the same as far as features. Anything either has the other does not that I should consider? Any sound diff? Thanks

I tried out the Behriger one before settling on a Presonus... The Behringer didn't have the gain the Presonus did and some of the channels were noisy... But it is a reference tool so noise is not a killer...

Shadowdog,

I recently bought a HA4700 used, thinking it was the same as the Samson S-phone.
I returned it and bought the S-phone because the master insert on the 4700 defeats the main inputs, where the master insert on the S-phone mixes the 2 signals.
This was an issue for me because I plan to use the master insert as a talkback in the headphones. With the 4700 I'd have to plug and unplug the mic 'cuz it cancels everything out but the mic.
To me this is not a useful way to utilize a master insert, so the S-phone is the way to go IMHO.

Hope this helps,

LDT2

I was wodnering about if you could mix the signals using the behringer, that is good to know. Now I am leaning toward the samson. I currently have sennheiser HD and AKG 240 DF phones and plan on picking up a few cheapies for others, any issues with the power to the phones?

You can mix signals on the Behringer but only on a per-channel basis, not a global basis (ie, each channel has a mixable insert point). Each channel does have 3 headphone outputs, but you'd be stuck with one volume control for all three sets of phones.

Another option for talkback might be a cheap dynamic with an on/off switch into a cheap pre (since quality isn't really an issue). Patch that into an open input on your interface and set it to monitor on the output pair that goes to your headphone amp.

I have the 4700 too. I have the main inputs hooked up to the stereo out of my mixer, and the front panel "insert" input hooked up at the same time to sub outs on the same mixer. My 4700 DOES mix the two signals. I can also hook up another sub out to each channels aux input.

I wonder how you came to your conclusion?

Maybe mine is real special?

FYI, the Samson Headamp is the only case I can think of where somebody reverse engineered a Behringer product!

How Uli like me now!

I just ordered a Presonus hp4 after reading some positive reviews here and elsewhere. I really want to be able to connect my nearfields to it, and most have said this unit doesn't color your sound the way the Samson C-control does. I'm not sure about the samson unit you're referring to, though.

I have the HA4700 too, and I'm not sure now that you mention it, but I was pretty confident that the insert does not interrupt the signal. Maybe you got one with a bum connector? The manual says the main has the "same priority" as the direct in whatever that means

Sorry guys,

I had the 4600 and that was how it was set up.
Behringer must have fixed that issue in the 4700.

My bad.

Check out headfi.com . Tons of useful information about headphones and headphone amps. There are sale/trade forums too.
Many people around there make top quality DIY stuff at much lower cost than commercial products.

i had several simple HP amps and the only one i TOTALLY dig is the
OZ AUDIO quemix 6

amazing machine, 6 HP outputs with alot of gain,
there is a main stereo input (lets say the mixer output goes in here)
and 4 extra injects, this means that on every channel you can adjust the volume of those 4 injects AND the main volume (awesome if someone asks to just turn a guitar up, or whatever....)
plus there is a send and return on every channel, for reverb or so..
all ins and outs are balanced, very low noise,
i totally dig it and i will definately buy this thing again if someone steals it !

plus the built quality is so much higher than berrie equipment, it looks nice, sounds nice, but the price... i think i paid around $150 for mine, second hand..

its not a 19" rack thing, but i like that, you can just put it on your desctop or anywhere else, doesn't take up alot of space,
i highly recommend this HP amp cause its so so nice, not just decent, but real real nice

...edit: i got 5 sennheiser HD280's connected to it, thats a killer combination

Earworm. I tried to google OZ AUDIO quemix 6 but nothing related comes up. Tried different combos too. Do you have an exact model # or a link to check out. I too need a HP amp and phones. i have a couple pairs of Sony 7506 but will probably get a few pairs of MoreMe phones.

The Carvin HP amp looks pretty good too.

Thanks,
B.

HA4700 works just fine . . .

I have had one for a little while now, and it is exceedingly well-behaved. You can mix in another signal without it defeating the first. It is noise free, plenty of level and I have no complaints
