matt rascal is on a distinguished road
I kept looking at the topic name and telling myself "don't go in there, you'll just get let down. It'll be a waste of time."

well I did have a look...so I figured I'd comment

keep up the good work

Man don't I know it - the hr.com/bbs is almost like a form of G.A.S., I've spent more time in here over the last several years (I lurk more than post) than I have actually recording. Music and recording are just involved subjects that it can get very consuming just to ponder the details.

I've heard it said that someone with a basic 4-track is more productive than someone with a full-on DAW like Pro-Tools, Cubase or Logic. I think I believe that. Recording is very "twiddly" and appeals to those who like a pasttime that is saturated with details and constraints.

i certainly agree with that - KISS applies to recording as well. people get all caught up in getting a crap load of gear, getting all sorts of things to tweak the mix... and then they sit back and dont feel like taking so much effort to record with all that stuff they have to deal with. I find that if i try to keep things as simple as possible, i record more often.

I don't use effects, i record to an ADAT, (although im probably going to sell it for a reel to reel soon), I don't use any EQ other than the three bands on my mixer (i prefer to actually experiment with mic placement in place of EQ - try it, it'll make you much better at mic placement), pretty much all i do use is compression. I don't own a computer at the moment, but even if i did, i wouldnt record to computer... i'd hate that. I'd rather record and mix on the ADAT or reel to reel, then use the computer for nothing more than mastering.

I've also found that no amount of reading and learning about recording will actually make you a better engineer than actual experience recording.

Well, when I used a four-track I was experimenting and recording TONS of my own music. As soon as I delved into computer recording, I very rarely do that. I've been recording my band or my friends instead.

I've been thinking about picking up a cheap Tascam or Fostex 4-track, just to make the recording part easier so that I can think about creativity instead.
