"Shelf" EQ
I was in a lesson in the studio today and the tutor asked if we knew what shelf EQ does, i thought that it affects all frequencys above or below a certain frequency, like above 12Khtz on the the Hi and below 80htz on the Lo, He says no, it just affects the one frequency, like only 12k on the highs. Is this right? Didn't wanna say at the time but doesn't sound right...

YOU are correct.

That's funny. Yup, just to reinforce you here, you were correct, the tutor was wrong. Ask him when was the last time he saw a book shelf consisting of a tiny little pointy piece of wood, as opposed to a big long piece of wood.

Sweepable EQ's with no width setting are semi-parametric. Add the width setting and it's full parametric. Some shelf EQ's allow you to set the corner frequency. If I'm wrong, I'm sure the pro engineers like John or Ronan will correct me. The way I understand it, Chamelious is correct. sl |

Some shelf EQ's also allow to change the "Q", but this functions differently than an individual band filter.
Basically a higher Q will give you a steeper slope up to the shelving point. If the EQ is a resonant shelf, then a steeper Q will also mean a stronger resonance (a bigger "dip" just before the "climb"). |

![]() Well there are lots of models of EQ with different combinations of the standard features. But a SHELF EQ is generally a %#&$ SHELF EQ. Your tutor either misunderstood the question, had a brain fart, or... there something else I don't know about thats going on. Maybe its one of those rare EQ's that can be used to replace dynamics after too much compression? (If that wasn't funny click here for the link to some FUNNY reading...)Chris |

).... a proper console allows the shelving frequency to be selected.
