Dropped CAD E300 2
I just received a "slightly used" CAD and, alas, it had to have been dropped. The basket is bent, there is a tiny dent where the basket hit the mic case, and the capsule is leaning slightly to the side of the dent. Granted, the capsule is rubber mounted and probably could be straightened.
I haven't had a chance to try it yet. What sort of damage could have occured? Could it have messed up the capsule's ability to perform normally? Worried ![]() |

I'd be worried, too. That doesn't sound good. Do you think it was dropped in shipment or sent that way? Did the seller say it was working? If it was me, I'd be nervous to test it, fearing I'd cause more damage.

Supposed to have been "mint". How could trying it out cause more damage?

Yes, it is the same setup. So I will make sure it has some charge before I try it out. You can see it at http://www.cadmics.com/e300_2.htm. I'll use my AT4050 to compare.

Weighs a ton, though. Gonna haff ta use the boat anchor on the other end of the boom... which is prolly why it was dropped in the first place... DAMN!

I think the only damage that could happen would be if the shock of the drop caused the diaphragm to stretch or come loose. Then it would just sound like pooh! The capsules usually are charged to about 60-70 volts in a tube mic, depending on how its biased. On 48v phantom, its probably there or lower so the voltage really couldn't hurt it. All the solid state components really can't be damaged by shock so the only real damage would be mechanical.
Does the capsule move when you turn the mic?

No, it doesn't move. I was able to make it straight very easily with my fingers. I guess it was made to move a bit to take some shock.

Thanks... I couldn't be happier with the sound... as with the 4050, no need for EQ (the equipment, not the magazine*). I'd call it a more colored sound than the 4050. Or maybe the 4050 just doesn't "hear" as well. Anyways, my acoustic guitar just shimmers! And this thing is supposed to accel on vocals. I can't wait to try THAT.
I'm guessing not many people have this mic. I've seen very little on the net about it. The little I did see was very positive so that's why I bought it. Oh, and it was a quarter of the price of new in Canada! That helped. *not an EQ editor, not a roadie |
