Question TASCAM 564 Digital Portastudio -- anyone know about this machine?

I just bought one on ebay, and for some reason, the mini-disk will not stay in the slot. The machine says, "Disc loading", then it kicks it back out and says, "No disc." Does anyone have a clue about these things?
Thanks in advance.

Arrow Gosh! You're the Man!

Maybe the disc mech was arthritic from lack of use, and just need to be force fed and loosened up!

I've always considered the 564 to be an awesome machine.

Sometimes you just gotta take stuff apart. That's Life 101.

Well done! Happy recording to you!

Haw haw! Thanks for the kudos. I am a rank newbie... the sum total of my previous recording experience has consisted of daisy-chaining Akai and Teac reel-to-reel tape machines together, three at a time (and that was 25 years ago). I'm now waiting for a user's manual from someplace in Canada... this should be a real learning experience. Once I get rolling, I'll probably clog this forum up with my questions!

Hi, the same thing happened to me the other day. i hadn't fired up my 564 for around a year. I got disc loading and then disc error. it was sitting on a high pedastal very near to one of my monitors. Anyway i moved it off the pedastal and away from the the monitor. on the way down i slightly banged it against the corner of my computer table. i placed it on top of a small box away from the speaker and it now works fine.

sadly although the problem is resolved i cannot cite the exact resolution . my theories are.

A. The magnet in the monitor was interferring

B. The slight knock realigned the disc drive

C. a miracle occurred that afternoon

Manual still hasn't arrived, but I was able to kludge together a rhythm track from my PC plus two guitar parts tonight. Can't wait to read the instructions!

Thanks for the input, faster. Maybe it was a little of all three? I don't know what my problem was, but hand-turning the motor whilst feeding it a disk seems to have fixed it.

i've "fixed" this problem on my 564 a few times with a knock. probably the extent of my repair "knowledge". it still works fine.

Hmmm... I'll keep that in mind. Has to be easier than taking the thing apart.
