Question Has anyone going through CD Baby used...

their $5 sale/promotion? (if you don't know what I'm talking about, you can put your CD on sale in a virtual $5 bin, but customers have to buy at least three CDs out of the bin to get the deal)

I'm about to release my first CD, and I'd rather sell more copies at a low profit margin than a few copies with higher profits. Just wondering if anyone has a feel for how effective this promotion is.

I suppose that depends on the typical CD Baby shopper. If there are a lot of people who explore CD Baby for new music, then it may work. However, I think it's more likely that people find out about CDB artists through other means, and just use CDB to get the CD.

So to conclude, I don't think it would be very effective. As a disclaimer, I have not actually used CDB.

Then again, worst case scenario is you sign up for the promo and don't sell anything. In which case you're no worse off than before. And, people are more likely to take a chance on a $5 CD. So go for it.

My 2 CDs are on CD Baby. They are both part of the promotion. I should add they are both EP CDs (6 tracks each) & their normal sale price is $6.

Half of the CDs i have sold on CDBaby were bought via the promotion. Would i have sold them anway? There is no way of knowing of course...

I've just finished recording my debut album and i will certainly put it in the promotion thing too.

Thumbs up

it is definately not going to hurt, if you are more concerned with selling CD's than making money. it is just another avenue for exposure so why not?
i have CD's available in the $5 promotion, and a good deal of page hits / sales come from that.
Basically, if somebody is looking specifically for your CD, they can still buy it at the regular price. Yet your CD is still there available for people browsing through the $5 bin section, who may happen upon your album and decide to buy it.
I see no reason not to do it... and I have to back up what the previous 2 posters stated as well... Go for it!

Thanks for your thoughts, all. Any doubts I had are gone.

My genre (for this project anyway is electronic New Age - it's not really suited to playing live, and I'm not inclined to play frontman anyway. Given that situation, my only opportunity to gain listeners is online, so I really have no excuse for not making my music as accessible as it can possibly be out there.
