Anyone use Auralex MoPads?

I have Event Studio Precision 8s and they can pump out the low end. I have a pretty good amount of bass trapping in my control room by way of 3" oc703 in the corners and 6" ceiling clouds. There were still some low end issues so I said screw it, for $30 I'll try them. They came yesterday and I listened to some tracks I'm currently working on and they sound totally different from the day before by just using those MoPads. It made it alot easier to hear what's going on in the low mids, a definite problem area. I was actually shocked to hear the guitar tracks that I though sounded good the other day suddenly not sound so good. I hope what I'm hearing is an increase in accuracy the will help translation a little better. Now I have to do a quick mix and try it in the car to be sure. Something drastic did occur however, I hope it's for the best.

The mopads do make a big difference over resting speakers (especially those!!) on a wooden desk/shelf. Before you put them under your speakers the wood would have been resonating at a low mid frequency. This would have supported your guitar sound making it sound fatter. With the mopads this resonance has gone and you'll now be hearing what's actually on the recording. It can make a huge difference to how well your mixes translate. And as you can position the angle of the speaker for a better monitoring position desk reflections should be reduced too.

I must say that I prefer heavy duty floor stands as the isolation is even greater, but in studios where space/cash is an issue I find them a very good alternative... especially on smaller speakers.


You'll now just have to get use to how the new setup sounds. A very good excuse to chill and listen to some nice tunes. Enjoy!

i too noticed a "tightening up" of my sound (and subsequent translation improvement) when i started using the mopads. they're definitely worth the money IMO.

I'm suprised you don't hear about these more often. It's probably the best $30 I've spent in a long time. Even if they didn't work as claimed, I needed something to give a slight downward angle to my monitors anyway.

I use MoPads as well. The downward angle is great in my setup, and the decoupling from the surface the speakers are sitting on helps as well.

They made a huge improvement for me over here as well. I definately didn't expect them to tighten up the bottom end in my room as much as they did.

I also use them but under a pair of Event PS 6 monitors. They were suggested to my by Auralex as part of a free room analysis. You essentially send them a diagram of your room and they suggest possible treatments--usually additional Auralex products.

yeah, i had the vibrating small mixing desk thing going on.
with a 2488SIAB, it was know to skip with vibrations on some threads.

by just placing foam under the speakers, the vibration nearly disappeared.
the "pads" are thicker and probably even better for sure.

read some speaker articles and they say the "de-coupling" like this keeps the bass in the cabinet, like the design was intended. you'll see others use metal spikes for the same reason.reduces transfer point to a tip of a spike.


i liked fishybob's note, detail that makes sense with the fatter guitar freq.
