off topic possibly.. fixing headphones

im real sorry in advance I really have no idea where to post this.

Ok my headphones are being strange. I just have a few questions to anyone with knowledge on this maybe.

Im electronically challened when it comes to this kind of stuff so bear with me.

Ok so I put them on and noticed they sound different. Its playing out of both sides/speakers but its the same thing on both. Its totally mono. I checked it on other sources to make sure it wasn't my headphone out on my soundcard.

Than I noticed the wire there seems to be a part where the rubber coating is cracked but theres no actual break.

Just curious if anyone has any idea of how i can test or know what to look for? If its something like a simple soldering job i can handle that. The headphones are a pair of AKG 270's, not sure if that helps. Im just a big fan of these i use them all the time and would rather get these fixed than find a new pair.

Sorry for the overly long post with probably none of the right information.

Any help is greatly apprecaited.

Thanks
Gary
