Tascam FW-1884

I am looking to upgrade my studio and to replace some older equipment. After consulting with a sales rep from a popular company, he suggested for me to get the new FW-1884. After examining all of the features of this control surface, I decided that by next week I was going to dish out $1000 for this marvel.

Today I was advised by a friend not to invest in this because Tascam has not devulged the type of converter this unit has and that it is too new and to little feedback from consumers is available right now.

He suggests the Tascam SX-1 which supposedly has a remarkable converter - but it is not firewire compatible. Supposedly I can find one cheaper now than the 1884 and it is by far superior, according to him.

Has anyone in this forum used or have any info regarding any of these products. This is my first post here. I would appreciate any feedback.

personally, i would prefer the 1884. i used to use a korg d16, which like the tascam sx1, is a closed system. i was frustrated with the onboard software, but there's no upgrading. "it is what it is."

on the other hand, the 1884 allows you to use pretty much whatever software you want to use.

as for the converters -- i wouldn't worry about it *IF* you take it home and like the sound. as with most gear, it's best to get it from a place with a generous return policy, so you can try it out for yourself.

some people think it's better to go with separate boxes -- converters, preamps, conversion, control surface -- so you can get the best of everything. this can be very expensive.

i use a motu hd192 with all outboard pre's and no control surface. going this route is costly. so if you have a tight budget, i'd say check out the 1884.

thats along the line of what i was thinking. the 1884 has templates for a few of the more popular software - plus you can expand and add to it also. I've also never used firewire and can try it with this tascam. also this place has a 30 day try policy.

but the SX-1 looks better (but that's not really important)

Thanks for the feedback RecTechMin.
